Actually, the word “white” is merely a mispronunciation by English settlers in South Africa ofĪ Dutch word, “wijd,” or wide. To date, the local event has raised about $239,000 to support these conservation efforts.A common misconception about rhinos is that white rhinos are white and black rhinoceroses are black. All three support an entire ecosystem, including some of the world’s most endangered plants and animals. Ujung Kulon is a 300-square-mile protected area that is home to the last 47 Javan rhinos in the world! BBSNP is 3,568 square kilometers of lush tropical rain forest where the Sumatran rhinos live, along with elephant, tiger, and Malayan sun bear. LWC (formerly Ngare Sergoi Sanctuary) is a 65,000-acre protected area that is home to the endangered black and white rhinos. Not only will conservation in these three areas help rhinos, but it will also help a whole host of other animals, such as Sumatran tigers and Malayan sun bears. The proceeds from Bowling for Rhinos are donated directly to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Action for Cheetahs in Kenya, Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park and Way Kambas National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia. ![]() All participants will enjoy two games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza and entertainment.
